But ends up on Nancy’s doorstep with a chilling story about a spear-wielding wild man who threatened him on the site.

Deputy Tommy Singletree, filling in as investigator while the sheriff's out of town—and juggling his role as a volunteer Scout leader—catches his first major case when Nancy reports the threat. But what begins as a strange scare turns deadly when a gruesome double homicide is discovered on the mound.

 As Tommy follows a trail tangled with folklore and land rights, Nancy fills in for him on a scout project, fueling additional accusations that Nancy, the boys, and Sweet Preserve itself have unleashed a curse on the county. Protecting the boys and Nancy should be just another duty, but long hours spent with Nancy spark an attraction he can't ignore.

With danger closing in, Tommy must separate legend from truth, find a killer, and protect those he cares for before revenge turns deadly and his first investigation becomes his last.
