This month’s food scene and recipe comes from Becca Wierwille’s contemporary middle grade novel, Road Trip Rescue—book one of the Road Trip Rescue series. (Read on for book giveaway opportunity.)

In this scene from Chapter 7, Kimmy Beckett sits down for breakfast with her parents, waiting to hear if she’ll be allowed to go on a road trip with her aunt to find her lost dog.

Here’s the Scene:

On Thursday morning, the most amazing smell welcomed me into the day. Mom’s homemade waffles.

Mom rarely made breakfast.

I found Mom and Dad in the kitchen. “What’s the occasion?”

“Does there have to be an occasion for me to make breakfast for my little girl?” Mom asked, slicing fresh strawberries beside a stack of golden-brown waffles.

A can of whipped cream sat beside the waffle iron. My eyebrows rose. “Yeah, I think so.”

Dad sipped coffee on a barstool at the counter. He tapped the seat beside him. “Come sit, sweetheart.”

A lump lodged in my throat. What would they say next? Please let me go with Aunt Skylar to find Bo.

“Dad and I talked last night.” Mom plopped a waffle on a plate and slid it across the counter to me, then did the same for Dad. “About Skylar’s offer.”

“Yeah?” My voice trembled with hope.

Dad held up his hand to pause the conversation. “God, thank you for this delicious meal, and help us trust you in all we do today. Amen!” He scooped a spoonful of strawberries onto his waffle, topped it with whipped cream, and took a big bite. “Wow, Susanna. Delicious.”

“Strawberries were on sale this week at the farm up the road, so I couldn’t resist,” Mom said.

I tapped my finger on the edge of my plate. “So, about Aunt Skylar’s offer?”

Dad paused with a forkful of waffle inches from his mouth. “Right.” He lowered the fork and looked at Mom. “Both of us had the same first thought. We didn’t want you to go.”

Mom nodded. “We like having you here. With us.” She picked at her breakfast. “Even though I know we both work a lot. And it gets lonely here for you sometimes.”

“Sometimes.” Spending the summer living like a hermit wasn’t the worst thing, but hanging out with Bo would be much better.

“You never ask for much,” Dad said. “And you never complain when I ask for help around the farm.”

True. I never even whined about the way my room smelled like a dairy barn after a day with the cows. But where were they going with this?

“You’re growing up so fast.” Mom leaned her forearms on the counter. “We’ve decided to let you choose how you want to spend your summer.”

My jaw dropped.
