Investigating Food Used in Novels

This month’s food scene and recipe comes from Patricia Bradley’s On the Edge of Trust, book 5 in the Logan Point series. (Patricia is offering a free copy to a commenter! Read on for details.)

Characters get a brief pause in action with a food scene as tension builds for main characters Tori Mitchell and Scott Sinclair.

Here’s the scene:

“Have you heard from Drew?”

Amy shook her head. “I was hoping you had news.”

“We don’t.”

This had to be killing her. He squeezed Tori’s shoulder. “Ben will find him.”
Her chin quivered, then she straightened her shoulders and handed the computer to Amy.

“This is Jenny’s. Can you look through her files? See if you find anything that will help us find Drew or understand why he was taken.”

“You bet.” She hugged Tori. “I’ve been praying.”

Tori muttered something he didn’t catch before she followed Amy into the house. Scott was right behind them, and the rich aroma of onions and garlic reminded him he hadn’t eaten anything since sharing the cheese and crackers with Drew. “Something smells good,” he said.

“I made spaghetti for dinner while I was waiting for you,” Amy said. “I hope that was okay.”

“Perfect. Where’s Caleb?” he asked.

“In the kitchen.” Amy nodded down the hallway.

“Good. We need to do some brainstorming, and I need some coffee.”

He strode to the kitchen, where Caleb was making coffee and a spaghetti sauce simmered on the stove. Looked as though it’d be a bit before they ate, so he grabbed a protein bar from the cabinet.

I can smell the sauce simmering. Patricia says she doesn’t really use a recipe and shares her own concoction with us.

More about On the Edge of Trust:

Sometimes the closer you get to justice, the deadlier it becomes

When decorated FBI undercover agent Scott Sinclair suffers a gunshot wound in his right arm, the injury threatens his future career in the field. He is determined to regain his former job by training himself to use his left hand, and failure is not an option--especially when he's unofficially pulled into an investigation.

Tori Mitchell is a passionate crime reporter and podcaster who has dedicated her life to seeking justice. Her relentless pursuit of the truth has freed a wrongfully convicted man from prison, making Tori an enemy of the true killer. When her nephew is accused of a different murder, nothing can stop her from getting involved and clearing his name.

Soon after Tori and Scott reconnect on the case, shots are fired, leaving them to wonder which of them has been targeted. As the investigation intensifies, so do the threats and the sparks between them, but Tori's doubtful if she can extend grace and trust to Scott. They'll have to combine their skills and rely on their growing relationship to outsmart the killer.

I'm loving all the town names! I named the town in my next book, Hickory Falls, TN...but some of these names are very intriguing!

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

Hi Patricia. It is Interesting to learn the name chosen for the town of your next book. I agree. These readers have come up with lots of intriguing names.

Stephanie From North Carolina At 3/16/2026 5:55:46 AM

If I wrote a suspense novel I would name the town Rose Hollow. I think it sounds friendly and eerie at the same time. It's inviting to visitors and newcomers. It also sets the scene for ominous things to happen.

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

I like the blend of friendly and eerie.

Miranda Summerset From GA At 3/15/2026 8:04:13 PM

Mystic Sparks because it sounds mysterious lol

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

Yes, it does sound mysterious.

Kelly V. From Florida At 3/15/2026 4:27:12 PM

I would name the town Willow Creek. It has a quiet and mysterious feel to it.

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

Nice idea.

Diane K From OR At 3/15/2026 4:18:08 PM

I'd call the town Smith. Just being different. Thank you!

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

You're right. It's a bit different in a common sort of way... Thanks for sharing.

Deborah Clark From Oregon At 3/15/2026 2:28:59 PM

I grew up in a small town in the mountains in Oregon, so I would choose to call it Bridge.

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

That sound like a neat name.

Edith Wheeler From Wills Point Texas At 3/15/2026 2:09:51 PM

I like Faiths Bridge. My faith is very important to me. And it's a Bridge to Heaven.

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

Love the meaning behind the name!

Amber From Idaho At 3/15/2026 1:54:07 PM

Dogwood - I love dogs, the tree and it's catchy to me; I'd go there just to find out how it got the name. Fun question!

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

Very interesting. It is catchy.

Gena Bessire From WA At 3/15/2026 12:20:50 PM

I would pick Hope's Edge for the irony of it. :)

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

Interesting picture it brings to mind for romantic suspense.

MICHAEL LAW From IA At 3/15/2026 9:45:38 AM

I would choose the town name to be Landfall because its got a ring to it. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

Has and interesting ring to it.

Linda Herold From CA At 3/14/2026 11:57:18 PM

I grew up in Linden, California so I would use the name Lindentown.

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

Sounds like a good name.

Nancy C Vance From AL At 3/14/2026 9:34:24 PM

I would name my town Tumca, a Creek version of rumbling or falling. I think it would be good for a suspense-based series. Perhaps skip the Creek and just name it Rumbling Waters.

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

Interesting since the Creek are in Alabama.

Kara A From Colorado At 3/14/2026 9:11:37 PM

The first thing that came to mind was Knights Hollow. No particular reason.

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

Thanks for sharing!

Debra Pruss From OH At 3/14/2026 8:25:10 PM

This sounds like a wonderful book. I love romantic suspense. Thank you for the opportunity. God bless you.

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

Thanks for stopping by.

Cyndi Newlan From OH At 3/14/2026 8:00:44 PM

Montville. It's part of the name of the town where I live. Just north of me is a bigger city of 25,000 and just of south me is a smaller town. It has neighborhoods but also horse farms and tree orchards, too. The best of both worlds!

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

Great setting idea.

Heather Swanson From Wingham Ont At 3/14/2026 7:59:36 PM

Brokenwood because a favorite show

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

Interesting and a new show to me.

Laura Rose From Springfield IL At 3/14/2026 7:54:28 PM

Faith's Hope would be the name of my town. Why? I would hope that the name would let the reader know that faith and belief are part of the story and that there would be a happy ending as hope is a type of promise for better days or times.

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

Lovely.

Jennifer Hallmark From AL At 3/14/2026 7:46:39 PM

Razors Edge, AL ??

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

Interesting and edgy!

Rebecca From Texas At 3/14/2026 7:43:36 PM

Hopeville, Wyoming. I’ve never been to Wyoming and would love to go and that sounds like the perfect name for a town full of grace and new beginningsz

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

Nice idea.

Rita Koehnen From OR At 3/14/2026 7:41:35 PM

Glacier Knob It was the first thing that popped into my head when reading the question. Otherwise I don't know why I picked it.

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

Interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Jan Tomalis From United States At 3/14/2026 7:40:07 PM

I would name it Eagle Point. I love to see eagles either in the trees or soaring above us. I would probably set the story in Alaska!

Reply by: Sally Jo Pitts

That creates a nice picture1Interes

Alicia Haney From Texas At 3/14/2026 7:39:40 PM

I would name the town Dripping Clouds because it would be in the mountains and mountains are close to the clouds , it would be in the forest and there would be cabins in this small town and we would get some rain sprinkles every so often. Thank you for the chance.

Interesting description.
